 WHAT IS THE GLOBAL SCHOLARS ACADEMY?

The World Affairs Council of Greater Houston Global Scholars Academy is a nonpartisan, nonprofit Academy providing an opportunity for 7th – 12th grade students to develop interest and demonstrate expertise in understanding different world cultures and important international issues. Curriculum will include a globally-focused course of study, including classes, coursework, projects, extracurricular activities and visits to relevant outside outside organizations.

GENERAL INFORMATION

What do I receive upon completion of the Academy?

As a participant in the WACH Global Scholars Academy, you’ll receive a completion certificate and hours of volunteer service that can be used to complete any requirements for an honor society or school club. Plus, the invaluable knowledge and networking opportunities from field experts in Foreign Affairs and International Business.

 

What is the accreditation of this Academy?

The Council is certified by the State Board for Educator Certification to provide Continuing Professional Education (CPE #501096).

Will WAC help me get an internship?

Houston offers students a rich variety of opportunities to interact with professionals in a variety of career fields.

ADMISSIONS & APPLICATION

What are the requirements for admission?

Applicants must submit the free online application, which includes two essays. The completed application must be submitted before your file is reviewed. 

How do I check the status of my application?

Once you have submitted a completed online application form, you will receive a message that your application is pending preliminary review by an admissions team member. We will contact you individually if additional information is required to complete your application.

Can I submit a writing sample with my application?

No. As part of completing your online application, you are required to write two essays, allowing us to gain a sense of your writing and analytical ability.

Do I need letters of recommendation?

Letters of recommendation are highly suggested, but not a requirement. While letters of recommendation offer insight into a student’s academic performance, we believe it’s important in this time to waive this requirement to best accommodate students and educators. 

Do you offer formal admissions interviews?

We neither require nor offer formal admissions interviews as a part of the application.

Can I submit my application after the posted deadline?

Applications received after the priority deadlines are reviewed on a space-available basis. Applications completed after the deadline may be postponed to the next session for review, depending on available space in the Academy.

TUITION & SCHOLARSHIPS

Under what circumstances is the Academy’s tuition fee waived?

To apply to the Academy is free. However, there is a $250 tuition fee that is due upon acceptance into the Academy.

All applicants will automatically be considered for all available scholarships upon completion of their application.

What forms of payment are accepted?

Upon acceptance, you will receive an invoice from the Council which indicated your electronic payment options by credit card, or check.

What is included in my tuition fees?

Tuition fees cover all curriculum and lesson materials, project mentorship, lunch, transportation, admission fees into field trip sites and other fees associated with this week-long program.
