In 2011, a wave of revolution spread through the Middle East as protesters demanded an end to tyranny, corruption, and economic decay. From Egypt to Yemen, a generation of young Arabs insisted on a new ethos of common citizenship. Six years later, their utopian aspirations have taken on a darker cast as old divides reemerge and deepen. In one country after another, brutal terrorists and dictators have risen to the top.

What are the possible consequences of a Trump presidency in Syria? Are we going to see a striking shift in the diplomatic posture from the Obama administration? How much will actually change on the ground?

About The Speaker

Robert F. Worth is a highly respected American journalist. During his 14-year career as a New York Times correspondent, Worth lived in the Middle East from 2003-2006 to cover the Iraq war. He returned to serve as the paper’s Beirut bureau chief from 2007-2011.

In 2011, Worth began reporting on the revolts in Egypt, Libya and Yemen. From 2014-2015, Worth was a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars where he pioneered a project entitled “The Arab Revolts and their Legacy.” Today, Worth contributes to the New York Times Magazine and the New York Review of Books. Worth has a Ph.D. from Princeton University.

Robert Worth’s book A Rage for Order: The Middle East in Turmoil, from Tahrir Square to ISIS, will be available for purchase and signing after the program.

According to The New York Times: “This is the book on the Middle East you have been waiting to read. The writing in A Rage for Order is so beautiful and the storytelling so easy that you won’t realize how much you are learning as you read. But there is no escaping the import of the stories. No way to read this marvelous book and not understand far more than you did before about this troubled region and the people struggling to find their way back to quiet lives.”
