By 2014, Landon Shroder had already spent six years living and working in Baghdad and he thought had seen the absolute worst of what war, sectarianism and factionalism could due to a country in chaos. But he was wrong.

Everything changed on June 9th, when the Islamic State rampaged towards Baghdad slaughtering, subjugating and razing much of north-central Iraq. Within 72 hours of its lightening advance, it looked like the government would collapse and a feeling of despair settled over the nation.

Shroder later left Iraq, but not before understanding that without an effective way to address the information war against the Islamic State there could never be an end to the violence and atrocities. With a team of his former colleagues they set about building an organization to counter the kinds of extremist media that inspires young people to commit acts of terrorism and violence.

Today, his organization AP Math Labs works with impacted communities by connecting foreign and domestic policy professionals with marketing, advertising, creative communicators and social media experts to create original content and online media campaigns that undermine the hateful propaganda while lending social voice to groups inflicted by such messages of violence. In addition to countering terrorist messaging, they have created campaigns to humanize Syrian refugees and bolster support for the LGBT community and minority business groups.
