12:30pm – Program

When Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, many wondered if the Ukrainian military could last 4 weeks, let alone 4 years, against one of the largest and most powerful armies in the world.

Now, well over 4 years later, not only have the people and the military of Ukraine people stopped Putin’s plan to destroy their democracy and reconstitute the Soviet Union, they have amazed and inspired the free world with their heroism, sacrifice and ingenuity.

Ukrainians are showing the world how to fight on the new, modern and ever-evolving battlefields of today – and what tactics and technologies may shape warfare for years to come.

The Council is honored to host a delegation Ukrainian combat veterans, who will present a first-hand and real-world account of Putin’s war on Ukraine.

Well over 1 million Ukrainians have served in the war and approximately 300,000 have been injured, many gravely. This delegation of Ukrainian veterans is traveling to Texas to learn how Americans in the government, non-profit & private sectors work to support veterans.

Featured Speaker: Hennadii Sukharnikov

Hennadii Sukharnikov is a Ukrainian military veteran and former prisoner of war who serves as Head of Partnerships for the Azov Brigade. Drawing on his own experience of service and captivity, he is developing a project to fund creative-arts grants for veterans, using art as a tool for healing and reintegration into civilian life. Hennadii is part of a delegation of Ukrainian veterans visiting Houston through the U.S. Congress’s Open World Leadership Program to learn from American veteran-support organizations and bring practical models for arts-based recovery programs back to Ukraine.

Featured Speaker: Mykhailo Onufer

Mykhailo Onufer is a Ukrainian military veteran who now serves as Chief Veterans Officer at Aurora Multimarket, where he works to expand employment and reintegration opportunities for veterans returning from active duty. He is currently developing a program to build adaptive mountain camps for amputee veterans, creating accessible outdoor spaces where wounded service members can rebuild strength, confidence, and community. Mykhailo is part of a delegation of Ukrainian veterans visiting Houston through the U.S. Congress’s Open World Leadership Program to study American models for veteran hiring, entrepreneurship, and adaptive sports programming that can be brought back and applied in Ukraine.
