6:00 pm – Wine & Registration
6:30 – 7:30 pm – Program
Governments around the world are racing to harness artificial intelligence, not just to modernize their economies, but to defend their borders, monitor their populations, and outmaneuver their adversaries. AI is already embedded in military operations, border security, intelligence gathering, and law enforcement. The technology moves fast. Oversight, accountability, and regulation are struggling to keep up.
But who decides how far is too far? And what does it mean for ordinary citizens when the most powerful surveillance and defense tools in history are controlled by governments, democratic or otherwise?
This Wine & Wisdom evening brings Professor Eric Botts, diplomat, cybersecurity expert, and Director of the Global Cybersecurity Program at the University of St. Thomas. Drawing on over three decades as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer and years of work in cybersecurity strategy, Botts examines how nations are deploying AI as a tool of power, defense, and control.
The conversation will explore how the United States, China, and other global powers are integrating AI into their military and national security strategies and what that competition means for global stability.
