Academic WorldQuest is a fast-paced team competition for high school students that tests their knowledge of international affairs and issues.

  • The competition consists of 4 rounds of questions.
  • Each round focuses on a unique category.
  • Students work together to determine correct answers.
  • Teams have 30 sec. to answer each question once it is read aloud.
  • Correct answers are tallied. The team with the highest number of correct answers wins the competition.

The overall winner will receive a trophy and a trip to Washington DC to compete at the national level. The top three winners will receive prizes.

  • Prepare for international studies and careers in the global economy.
  • Enhance understanding of topics in existing curriculums and AP courses.
  • Contribute to the National Common Core State Standards by fostering reading comprehension skills.

What materials do teams receive to prepare for the competition?

  • All teams will receive the comprehensive study guide created by the World Affairs Councils of America.
  • This study guide covers all topics for the competition and has all articles that questions are drawn from.
  • All teams will also receive copies of the Great Decisions publication for the Foreign Policy institute to review for the Great decisions section of the competition.
  • Additional study materials from the local chapter, WAC of Greater Houston, and the national organization, World Affairs Councils of America will be uploaded to the website and delivered to teams via email.
  • Beginning in January 2022, all teams will receive access to the WACA Weekly World News Update newsletter that will be used at the national competition for the current events section.

What are some best practices to prepare for the competition?

  • Start studying early! Some teams start studying for five months in advance of the competition.
  • Divide and conquer the material amongst your teammates.
  • Hold mock-competitions at your SWAC meetings.
  • Keep up to date on current events from around the world.
  • Include the latest edition of the Great Decisions publication in your study materials.
  • Review the Academic World Quest guidelines and study materials.
  • Read the articles listed in the study materials.
