Ambassador of Pakistan to the U.S., Dr. Asad Majeed Khan, on Pakistan Today and Its Vital Role in South Asia and Beyond
About The Event
The election of Prime Minister Imran Khan last year brings the promise of a new era for the people of Pakistan and relations with India, Afghanistan, the U.S., China and the region. Domestically, Khan has introduced a massive new antipoverty campaign, pledged to curb religious extremists and opened new areas to oil and gas exploration along with drafting Pakistan’s first shale gas policy.
Internationally, relations with India remain strained. But following recent military clashes in Kashmir, Khan was praised by many for deescalating tensions and avoiding inciting rhetoric. Whereas China has pledged $60 billion to construct the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, but is also looking to increase military cooperation and spending with Pakistan. For years relations with Afghanistan have been complicated by Pakistan’s lack of full control of the tribal areas near the border and questions regarding possible support for Islamists. But at a rally in April, Khan predicted ‘mutual peace’ would be possible in Afghanistan as a result of the current talks between the U.S. and the Taliban.
Ambassador Asad Majeed Khan will discuss the state of Pakistan today and its crucial role in South Asia and beyond.
