About The Speaker

Susan Rice is an American diplomat who served as the 24th U.S. National Security Advisor from 2013-2017, playing a key role in the coordination of intelligence and military efforts within the Middle East during her tenure. In January 2009, the U.S. Senate confirmed her nomination by former president Barack Obama as permanent Representative to the United Nations, becoming the first African American woman to serve in this position. From 2002-2009, Susan Rice was a senior fellow in Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution, focusing on the topics of U.S. foreign policy, weak and failing states, the implications of global poverty and transnational threats to security. Rice also served as assistant secretary of African Affairs in 1997, becoming one of the youngest assistant secretaries of state in U.S. history.

Prior to assuming her duties as U.N. representative and U.S. National Security Advisor, Rice worked at the National Security Council in Washington D.C. as the director of international organizations and peacekeeping before her post as special assistant to the president and senior director for African Affairs in 1995.

Susan Rice earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford in 1986, then attended the University of Oxford to earn her M.Phil and D.Phil in international relations.
