West Africa is a region of astonishing beauty and innovation, with a wide variety of peoples and cultures. It is also the heart of Africa’s film industry! Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana and Senegal produce some of the most compelling documentaries, dramas and comedies on the global cinema scene today. From Nollywood to Ghallywood, these films give voice to the next generation of young Africans as they reach across continents through film.

In collaboration with The West African Film Festival, the World Affairs Council of Greater Houston is pleased to present unique films that provide insight into the complexity and diversity of this region and offer a realistic perspective on the culture, art, politics, history and everyday lives of those living in this portion of the continent.

Afia Attack: The Untold Stories of Women During the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War (40 minutes)

During the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War, many women had to find ways of obtaining food, medicine and essentials for their families. These women undertook a very dangerous journey across enemy lines into Nigerian territory to trade and bring back supplies. This phenomenon was called ‘Afia Attack’ and not all women made it back home. This documentary-style film combines historical facts about the Nigeria-Biafra war with personal stories of women who lived through it.

Where They are Expected (20 minutes)

For many Africans, the decision to leave home in search of work in Europe comes with many risks. This documentary explores a unique story of migration from the perspective of the co-founders of Teranga-Go!, a ‘taxi’ service that runs between Spain and Senegal. Through Teranga-Go!, the co-founders illustrate a simple solution to one of the most pressing concerns of our current political moment – free movement between Europe and the African continent.
