Marie Arana is a critically acclaimed Peruvian-American author of fiction and nonfiction with a diverse literary background. Her latest work, Silver, Sword and Stone: Three Crucibles in the Latin American Story, chronicles the lives of three contemporary Latin Americans whose lives have been shaped by three of the region’s driving forces: exploitation (silver), violence (sword) and religion (stone).

About The Speaker
Marie Arana was born in Peru and moved to the U.S. at the age of nine. After completing her B.A. in Russian Language and Literature at Northwestern University and her M.A. in Linguistics and Sociolinguistics at Hong Kong University, Marie began her career in book publishing as Vice President and Senior Editor at Harcourt Brace and Simon and Schuster. Beginning in 1993, Marie started to work at the Washington Post as editor in chief of “Book World,” a position in which she established a partnership between the Washington Post, the White House, and the Library of Congress in hosting the National Book Festival on the Washington Mall.
She has served on the board of directors of the National Book Critics Circle and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. She has been a judge for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. In 2015, Marie was named the John W. Kluge Center’s Chair of the Cultures of the Countries of the South. She is currently Literary Advisor to the Library of Congress, Senior Consultant to the Librarian of Congress, as well as the director for the National Book Festival.
