ABOUT THE EVENT:

Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi is the most powerful and influential female American politician in history. She served for 8 years as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives over 4 terms and was 2nd in the line of presidential succession for Presidents Bush, Obama, Trump and Biden.

During her historic career leading the House of Representatives and the Intelligence Committee, Speaker Pelosi has long championed the need for U.S. global leadership. But she has also been willing to recognize the limitations of American power and the vital need to engage key U.S. allies.

She has supported the use of U.S. military power when necessary. But Speaker Pelosi has also been willing to be in the unpopular, political minority – as when she voted against the Invasion of Iraq stating: ‘I have seen no evidence or intelligence that suggests that Iraq indeed poses an imminent threat to our nation’.

Since early in her Congressional career, Speaker Pelosi has also been a longtime critic of the Chinese Communist Party and its human rights abuses. Long before she unsettled the Chinese government with her controversial visit to Taiwan last year, in 1991 not long after the Tiananmen Square Massacre, she visited the site and unfurled a banner dedicated ‘to those who died for democracy’.

Speaker Pelosi has also long been wary of Vladimir Putin and supportive of those who are in the shadow of his aggression and repression. Only a few weeks after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine last year, she made a dangerous visit to war torn Kyiv to express strong support for the Ukrainian people, its government and its military.

The U.S. is facing the most challenging, complex and dangerous world order since the Cold War. Speaker Pelosi will address the challenges posed by China, Russia and other threats to U.S. leadership – and the risks of increased U.S. assertiveness and the dangers of stepping back from the world stage.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

52nd Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi

Nancy Pelosi has represented San Francisco in Congress for more than 36 years. She served as the 52nd Speaker of the House of Representatives, having made history in 2007 when she was elected the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House. Pelosi made history again in January 2019 when she regained her position second-in-line to the presidency – the first person to do so in more than six decades.

Speaker Pelosi led House Democrats for 20 years and previously served as House Democratic Whip. In 2013, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame at a ceremony in Seneca Falls, the birthplace of the American women’s rights movement.
