When we’re juggling work, school, hobbies, chores, and family time, participating in your community seems like a great idea in theory. But how do you actively do it?

The good news is that participation doesn’t have to be difficult or time-consuming. Alan Steinberg will help us telling us how we can actively take part as citizens to uplift our community and the people in it.

Local To Global engages early career professionals, aged 21 to 40, in peer-driven learning and dialogue on leading international affairs issues. An excellent networking opportunity, Local to Global events are informal yet informative, emphasizing discussion, dialogue, and lively interaction between early career professionals. Join us to meet other early-career professionals who are passionate about world affairs and community engagement.

About The Speaker

Alan Steinberg, Ph.D. is a passionate civic leader with the desire to improve the Houston community through education, advocacy and civic action by connecting people who can turn challenges into opportunities. Currently serving as the President/CEO of the West Houston Association, Alan is an accomplished administrator, educator, facilitator, mentor, researcher, and volunteer. Before coming to the West Houston Association, he served as Associate Director of Houston Programs and Partnerships within Rice University’s Center for Civic Leadership where he led the Houston Action Research Teams and coordinated assessment activities. Previously he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Political Science at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX, and as the Director of Central Operations and Senior Fellow with the Center for Advanced Defense Studies in Washington, D.C.

Alan is very involved with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, currently serving on eight committees including as Vice Chairman of both the Transportation Committee and the Houston General Go Texan Committee. He serves on the board of directors of the Memorial Management District, the advisory committee for Plant It Forward Farms, and the NEXTGen Leadership Committee for the Holocaust Museum Houston. He volunteers with the American Red Cross Texas Gulf Coast Region, HAY Center for foster youth, the Alief Super Neighborhood Council and is a community associate of Duncan College at Rice University.

Alan holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Houston, an M.S. in Defense and Strategic Studies from Missouri State University, a Graduate Certificate in International Affairs from the Bush School of Public Service, and a B.S. in Psychology from Texas A&M University. He is an Alumni of Leadership Houston, Class XXXVIII, and is always ready to work with others to make Houston an increasingly better place to live, work and play.
