Jul 8, 2021

HOUSTON, July 8, 2021 – The World Affairs Council of Greater Houston is pleased to announce bp’s Starlee Sykes and Alistair Vickers as the 2021 International Citizens of the Year. A distinction of the 23rd Annual Jesse H. Jones Award Luncheon, the International Citizen of the Year Award is presented annually to a Houstonian whose work has contributed to the city’s international stature. This year, the Council is proud to nominate not just one, but two, International Citizens of the Year who represent Houston well as the Energy Capital of the World.

“We are pleased to honor bp’s Starlee Sykes and Alistair Vickers, a couple who embody the past, present, and future of the global energy industry,” said Maryanne Maldonado, Chief Executive Officer of the World Affairs Council of Greater Houston.

Starlee, Senior Vice President of Gulf of Mexico and Canada, bp, is at the helm of one of the world’s largest deep water businesses. With more than 20 years of leadership in the energy sector, we are thrilled to recognize Starlee and her accomplishments improving collaboration with industry partners, leading diverse international teams, and involvement with the Houston community.

Alistair, Chief Executive Officer of bp Wind Energy, has held executive leadership roles across bp’s business. In his most recent posts, Alistair was responsible for bp’s worldwide activities in Upstream Productions Operations and Wells Organizations, respectively. Over the course of his career, Alistair has worked across five continents and worked in two joint ventures.

“At bp, our ambition is not only to become a net zero emissions company by 2050 or sooner, but also to help the world get to net zero. We’ll only get there with more, not less, international understanding and collaboration – values that organizations like the World Affairs Council have made it their mission to promote. We are honored to receive this award and remain committed to doing our part,” said Sykes and Vickers.

For more than 20 years, the Jesse H. Jones Award Luncheon has served as Houston’s premier international affairs networking luncheon for leaders in business, politics, finance, education, energy, and more. The Council is proud to host sought-after speakers at each year’s luncheon, from the Astros’ Jim Crane to U.S. Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette.
